How to use WhoChanged

Install the plugin, read the activity log, buy PRO through Freemius checkout, then activate your license key in WordPress.

WordPress 6.0+ Free + PRO Freemius licensing

Install & activate

  1. From WordPress.org (recommended for Free)

In wp-admin go to Plugins → Add New, search for WhoChanged, then Install and Activate.

  2. From a ZIP

Go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, choose the WhoChanged ZIP, Install, then Activate.

  3. Open the log

A new WhoChanged menu appears in the admin sidebar. Open it to see the activity log.

No account signup is required for the Free plan. Logging starts immediately after activation.

Activity log

WhoChanged records meaningful changes made inside wp-admin: settings, Customizer, plugins, users & logins, posts/comments, menus, and WooCommerce order deletions (when WooCommerce is active).

Activity log screen

  • Filter by user, event type, and date range.
  • Search for option names, usernames, or other text in the log.
  • Open an entry to see the before / after values and who made the change.
  • Export — CSV on Free; Excel (XLS) and PDF on PRO.

Admin bar

While you browse wp-admin, open the WhoChanged item in the admin bar for a quick peek at recent activity without leaving the current screen.

Statistics

Go to WhoChanged → Statistics for charts (actions, users, trends). PDF export of the statistics dashboard is a PRO feature.

Settings

Open WhoChanged → Settings.

  • Free plan — 30 days of history, every user tracked, Administrators can view the log, CSV export.
  • PRO plan unlocks:
    • Retention: 7 / 30 / 60 / 90 days or unlimited
    • Email alerts for selected event types
    • Which roles are tracked, and which roles can view the log
    • Excel & PDF exports, statistics PDF
    • One-click purge of all logs
  • Danger Zone — optionally delete all WhoChanged data when the plugin is uninstalled (off by default).

On Free, PRO settings can be saved but only take effect after a valid PRO license is active on that site.

Buy PRO — Freemius checkout

You can purchase from the website or from inside WordPress. Both use Freemius checkout.

Option A — From the website

  1. Open pricing

Go to the pricing section on this site.

  2. Choose a plan
  3. Complete checkout

Pay with card or PayPal. Use an email you can access — your license key is sent there.

  4. Check your inbox

After payment succeeds, open the Freemius purchase / license email.

Option B — From wp-admin

  1. Open upgrade

Go to WhoChanged → Settings and click Upgrade to PRO, or open WhoChanged → Pricing / Upgrade.

  2. Pick a plan & pay

Complete checkout in the Freemius overlay or hosted page.

  3. Auto-activate

When checkout finishes on the same site, Freemius usually activates the license automatically — PRO features unlock right away.

14-day money-back guarantee. Prices are in USD. Billing cycle depends on the plan option you select at checkout (annual / lifetime where offered).

After a successful checkout

WhoChanged uses Freemius Checkout. For WordPress plugins, Freemius issues a license key immediately after payment so you can unlock PRO right away.

What you receive

  • A confirmation screen in Freemius Checkout when payment succeeds.
  • An email to the address used at checkout with your license key, receipt / invoice link, and access to the Freemius customer portal.
  • If you bought from inside the same site’s wp-admin, Freemius typically activates the license on that site automatically — refresh Settings and look for the PRO Active badge.

What to do next

  1. Bought inside wp-admin on this site?

You’re usually done. Open WhoChanged → Settings. If you see PRO Active, retention, alerts, role controls and PRO exports are unlocked.

  2. Bought on the website (or for another site)?

Install WhoChanged on the target site (Free from WordPress.org is fine), then go to WhoChanged → AccountActivate License and paste the key from your email. See Activate license.

  3. Need PRO on more sites?

Personal = 1 site, Business = up to 5, Agency = unlimited. Activate the same license on each site up to your plan’s seat limit. Deactivate unused seats before moving them.

  4. Keep your email / portal handy

Use the Freemius customer portal (link in the purchase email) to download invoices, update the payment method, cancel renewal, or recover a lost license key.

What unlocks after activation

  • Configurable / unlimited log retention
  • Email alerts for selected events
  • Role-based tracking & viewer access
  • Excel (XLS) & PDF exports (including Statistics PDF)
  • One-click purge of all logs
  • PRO plugin updates delivered through Freemius inside WordPress

Still on Free after paying? Check spam for the Freemius email, then activate manually under WhoChanged → Account. Full fixes are in Troubleshooting.

Activate your license key

Use this when you bought on the website (or on another site) and need to unlock PRO on a WordPress install.

  1. Install WhoChanged

Free from WordPress.org is fine — the same plugin unlocks PRO.

  2. Open Account

In wp-admin go to WhoChanged → Account.

  3. Activate License

Click Activate License (or the equivalent Freemius button on that screen).

  4. Paste your key

Enter the license key from your Freemius purchase email, then confirm.

  5. Confirm PRO Active

WhoChanged → Settings should show a PRO Active badge. Retention, alerts, role controls and PRO exports become available.

You can also open Account from Settings:

  1. Settings → Updates & License

    Go to WhoChanged → Settings.

  2. Manage Account

Click Manage Account, then activate or sync your license.

One license can only be active on as many sites as your plan allows (1 / 5 / unlimited). To move a seat to a new site, deactivate it on the old site first (Account → Deactivate), then activate on the new one.

Manage account, billing & updates

  • WhoChanged → Account — license status, activate / deactivate, user profile linked to Freemius.
  • Update payment method, download invoices, or cancel renewal from the Freemius customer portal linked in your purchase email / Account screen.
  • Plugin updates — Free updates via WordPress.org; PRO updates are delivered through the Freemius SDK inside WordPress (Plugins screen), once the license is active.

Plans & site limits

Plan Sites Checkout
Free Unlimited installs
Personal 1 site Checkout
Business Up to 5 sites Checkout
Agency Unlimited sites Checkout

Troubleshooting

I paid but still see Free plan

Open WhoChanged → Account and activate the license key from your email. If you checked out inside wp-admin on this same site, refresh the page or reconnect the account. Confirm you are logged into wp-admin as an Administrator.

I did not receive the license email

Check spam/junk. Search for “Freemius” or “WhoChanged”. You can also recover the license from the Freemius customer portal using the email used at checkout.

“License activation failed” / site limit reached

Your plan’s site quota is full. Deactivate the license on an unused site from that site’s Account screen, or upgrade to Business / Agency.

Nothing appears in the activity log

Make a change in wp-admin (e.g. save Settings → General), then reload WhoChanged. Only admin-area events are logged — front-end visitor traffic is not.

Where is my data stored?

In a dedicated table in your WordPress database. Nothing is sent externally unless you enable PRO email alerts, which use your site’s own mail delivery.
